John Piper first showed his paintings in St Ives
in the late 60’s. Since this time, he has exhibited his
work widely throughout England, as well as on the continent,
in both solo and mixed shows.
He is essentially a landscape painter. He makes small sketches
and written notes during walks across the Penwith Moors and uses
these as a basis for paintings completed in the studio.
Texture, colour and form determine the eventual outcome of the
preliminary studies. Granite cottages, barns, outcrops of rock,
blackthorn trees and heavy skies are his constant themes.
All of John Piper’s paintings are produced
in oils, often on board, with larger paintings generally on canvas.
In both
cases the emphasis is on glazes of colour laid one upon the other.
Sometimes earlier drawing is allowed to show through; whilst
at other times the work is deeply scratched and scraped, providing
an intensity of depth and colour.
