After spending his early childhood in a small fishing village
in Scotland, Neil and his family moved south.
At the earliest opportunity
he attended Farnham School of Art in Surrey and left inspired and
determined to pursue a career in painting. There followed a lengthy
stay in Florence, painting and absorbing the Art of the Renaissance.
During his teaching period at Guilford School of Art and West
Surrey College of Art, Neil became fascinated with the nature of
the landscape of Penwith and now paints full-time, working from
his studio on the north coast at Hellesveor, with dramatic uninterrupted
views of the Atlantic coastline.
He works by observing the landscape
and absorbing the feelings and emotions that it creates in him.
Neil also makes sketches on
the spot, which act as a catalyst to his work when he is back in
his studio. His paintings recall Turner with their energy, directness
and immediacy. Light, atmosphere and the power of the weather are
all pervading. The landscape in his paintings at times feels ancient,
weatherworn and even battle scarred. His apparent joy of manipulating
paint in his landscapes re-affirms his search for a tenuous balance
between personal imagery and a surface that celebrates painting.
